自河南经乱⑴，关内阻饥⑵，兄弟离散，各在一处。因望月有感，聊书所怀，寄上浮梁大兄⑶、於潜七兄⑷、乌江十五兄⑸，兼示符离及下邽弟妹⑹。

Zì hé-nán jīng luàn, guān nèi zǔ jī, xiōng-dì lí sàn, gè zài yí chù. Yīn wàng yüè yǒu gǎn, liáo shū suǒ huái, jì-shàng fú-liáng dà-xiōng, yǘ-qián qī-xiōng, wū-jiāng shí-wǔ-xiōng, jiān shì fú-lí jí xià-guī dì-mèi.

[since] [Henan] [experience] [upheaval], [Guan] [inside] [obstacle] [famine], [brothers] [leave] [scatter], [individually] [at] [one] [place]. [because] [see] [moon] [have] [thought], [send] [Fuliang] [the big brother], [Yuqian] [the seventh brother], [Wu river] [the fifteenth brother], [and] [show] [Fuli] [and] [Xiagui] [sister-in-law].

时难年荒世业空⑺，

shí nán nián huāng shì-yè kōng,

[time] [difficult] [year] [famine] [heritage] [empty]

弟兄羁旅各西东⑻。

dì-xiōng jī lǚ gè xī-dōng.
[brothers] [bind] [travel] [individually] [west and east]

田园寥落干戈后⑼，

tián-yüán liáo-luò gān-gē hòu,

骨肉流离道路中。
gǔ-ròu liú-lí dào-lù zhōng.

吊影分为千里雁⑽，

diào-yǐng fēn wéi qiān-lǐ yàn,

⑴河南：唐时河南道，辖今河南省大部和山东、江苏、安徽三省的部分地区。
⑵关内：关内道，辖今陕西大部及甘肃、宁夏、内蒙的部分地区。阻饥：遭受饥荒等困难。
⑶浮梁大兄：白居易的长兄白幼文，公元798至799年（贞元十四、五年）间任饶州浮梁（今属江西）主簿。
⑷於潜七兄：白居易叔父白季康的长子，时为於潜（今浙江临安县）县尉。
⑸乌江十五兄：白居易的从兄白逸，时任乌江（今安徽和县）主簿。
⑹符离：在今安徽宿县内。白居易的父亲在彭城（今江苏徐州）作官多年，就把家安置在符离。下邽：县名，治所在今陕西省渭南县。白氏祖居曾在此。
⑺时难年饥：指遭受战乱和灾荒。饥：一作“荒”。世业：祖传的产业。
⑻羁旅：漂泊流浪。
⑼寥落：荒芜零落。干戈：古代两种兵器，此代指战争。
⑽吊影：一个人孤身独处，形影相伴，没有伴侣。千里雁：比喻兄弟们相隔千里，皆如孤雁离群。
⑾辞根：草木离开根部，比喻兄弟们各自背井离乡。九秋蓬：深秋时节随风飘转的蓬草，古人用来比喻游子在异乡漂泊。九秋：秋天。
⑿乡心：思亲恋乡之心。五处：即诗题所言五处。

  
     TO MY BROTHERS AND SISTERS ADRIFT
     IN TROUBLED TIMES THIS POEM OF THE MOON
    
   Since the disorders in Henan and the famine in Guannei, my brothers
   and sisters have been scattered. Looking at the moon, I express my
   thoughts in this poem, which I send to my eldest brother at Fuliang,
   my seventh brother at Yuqian, My fifteen brother at Wujiang and my
   younger brothers and sisters at Fuli and Xiagui.
  
     My heritage lost through disorder and famine,
     My brothers and sisters flung eastward and westward,
     My fields and gardens wrecked by the war,
     My own flesh and blood become scum of the street,
     I moan to my shadow like a lone-wandering wildgoose,
     I am torn from my root like a water-plant in autumn:
     I gaze at the moon, and my tears run down
     For hearts, in five places, all sick with one wish.
